BIOGRAPICAL SKETCHES

JEFFREY DOZIER: is Professor of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, received his B.A. from California State University, Hayward in 1968 and his Ph.D. in 1973 from the University of Michigan. He has taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 1974. He is a Principal Investigator on NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS), chairman of the Science Advisory Panel for EOS Data and Information, and, with Dr. Michael Stonebraker of UC Berkeley, co-Principal Investigator on Digital Equipment Corporation's flagship external research project, Sequoia 2000: Large-Capacity Object Servers for Global Change Research. From 1990-1992 he was the EOS Senior Project Scientist. He provides the perspective of a working scientist who is well versed about computing challenges in modern Earth science and who works with large volumes of data. He has published more than 150 articles, chapters, and books in his research interests: snow hydrology, Earth System Science, radiative transfer in snow, remote sensing and data systems, image processing, and terrain analysis. Dr. Dozier is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, Editor of Geophysical Research Letters from 1990-1993, and a Distinguished Visiting Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He serves on two Boards of the National Academy of Science: the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board and the Board on Global Change. He received the NASA Public Service Medal in 1993.

MICHAEL F. GOODCHILD: is Professor of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Director, National Center for Geographic Info. and Analysis. He received his BA degree from Cambridge University in Physics in 1965 and his PhD in Geography from McMaster University in 1969. After 19 years at the University of Western Ontario, including three years as Chair, he moved to Santa Barbara in 1988. In 1990 he was given the Canadian Association of Geographers Award for Scholarly Distinction. He was Editor of Geographical Analysis between 1987 and 1990, and serves on the editorial boards of eight other journals and book series. His research interests center on the development of models of error and uncertainty in geographical data; the theory of geographical data models; and national spatial data policy issues. He has published some 200 articles and three books.

OSCAR H. IBARRA: received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from UCB in 1967. He was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1969-90, and is currently Professor of Computer Science at UCSB. Ibarra's primary research interests are parallel computing, design and analysis of algorithms, theory of computation, computational complexity, and VLSI computation. He has over 150 research publications and has presented papers at numerous national and international conferences. Ibarra was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1984 for his work in systolic systems. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute. He is on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Computers, J. of Parallel and Distributed Computing, Thoretical Computer Science, Int. J. of Foundations of Computer Science, and J. of VLSI Signal Processing. Ibarra has graduated sixteen PhD students and is currently supervising several graduate students.

SANJIT MITRA: received the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Physics in 1953 from Utkal University, Cuttack, India; the M.Sc. (Tech.) degree in Radio Physics and Electronics in 1956 from Calcutta University; the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1960 and 1962, respectively. From June 1962 to June 1965, he was at the Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering. He was with Bell Telephone Laboratories, Holmdel, New Jersey, from June 1965 to January 1967. He has been on the faculty at the University of California since then, first at the Davis campus and more recently at the Santa Barbara campus as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he served as Chairman of the Department from July 1979 to June 1982. He has published over 420 papers in analog and digital signal processing, and image processing, eight books, and holds two patents. Dr. Mitra is the recipient of the 1973 F.E. Terman Award and the 1985 AT& Foundation Award of the American Society of Engineering Education, the Education Award of the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society in 1989 and the Distinguished Senior U.S. Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of West Germany in 1989. In May 1987 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology degree from the Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland. He is an Honorary Professor of the Northern Jiaotong University, Beijing, China. Dr. Mitra is a Fellow of the IEEE, AAAS and SPIE.

TERENCE R. SMITH: received his undergraduate degree in Geography from Cambridge University in 1965, and a PhD in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1971. He served on the faculties of the University of Western Ontario and of the University of Rochester before coming to UCSB in 1976. Dr. Smith is currently Professor of Geography and Professor of Computer Science at UCSB. He served as Chair of the Department of Computer Science from 1986-90; he was Associate Director the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis for the period 1988-90; and he is currently director of the Center for Computational Modeling and Systems. His current research interests focus on the design, development and testing of spatial and scientific databases, and the design and development of computational systems that support the modeling of complex phenomena. Dr. Smith is currently PI on a three-year award from NSF and another 3-year award from NASA to study computational support for scientific databases, and he has been CO-PI on nearly 40 research awards. Dr. Smith has published over 80 research papers; he has presented papers at numerous conferences and workshops; and he has graduated 8 PhD students, and is currently supervising several PhD candidates.
