Management of Research

The management of research must ensure that the project's resources are directed to investigations consistent with the project's ultimate goal, the development of a successful prototype. In addition, however, research should produce results of high quality that are generalizable as far as possible beyond the immediate objectives of the project, and are widely disseminated within the scientific literature. The need for high quality, and its achievement through the use of the peer review process, are central to the project's objectives.

Scientific direction will be provided by the Alexandria Project's Research and Development Committee. The members of this committee will include the Project Director and the leaders of the project's research and development teams. The leaders of these teams will be appointed by the Executive Committee. The main functions of the Science Committee will be to:

  1. establish priorities for research, within the domain established by the research plan and consistent with the development of the prototypes;
  2. recommend allocation of resources to meet the research priorities; and
  3. oversee the research productivity of the project, and ensure maintenance of high quality through peer review.
The Science Committee will meet regularly and will be chaired by the Project Director.

The basic research and development will be organized in terms of a set of research and development teams, Each such team will be composed of a relatively small numbers of investigators and will be given given specific responsibility for investigating/designing/developing/testing specific components/functions of the system. The membership of the teams will be overlapping, to ensure adequate knowledge about the activities of other groups. Each group will have an leader appointed by the Executive Committee, and the groups will meet regularly to discuss results, directions and interactions, chaired by the team leaders. The general direction for the research teams will be provided by the Research and Development Committee. There will be frequent workshops for the project as a whole at which presentations are made and general discussions are held.

The research and development teams will be initially constituted as follows:
