UCSB will be the hub of the project, and the location of most of
its activities. Several centers and departments will
participate, specifically:
-
the Department of Computer Science, and in particular the
Center for Computational Modeling and Systems (CCMS), with
expertise ranging from system architecture to database
design and algorithms;
-
the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and
in particular the Center for Information Processing Research
(CIPR), with expertise in image processing, pattern
recognition, and image compression;
-
the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis,
a multidisciplinary NSF research center founded in 1988 and
focusing on basic research in the theory and techniques of
geographic information systems;
-
the Center for Remote Sensing and Environmental Optics,
focusing on scientific research based on remote sensing, and
a partner with UC Berkeley and other UC campuses in the
Sequoia/2000 project to develop a distributed computing
environment for Earth system science;
-
the UCSB Library, and in particular the Map and Image
Laboratory, which contains one of the nation's largest map
libraries and Earth image collections, with extensive
digital holdings.
Each of these groups will collaborate in the project through
cross-membership of individuals on the Alexandria Executive and
Science Committees, and through contribution of space and
equipment as appropriate. The Library will provide the central
space to house the bulkier components of the testbed and the data
entry activities. Parallel computation facilities will be
provided by the Department of Computer Science.
