Equipment and Facilities Needs

We are investigating several ways to increase the bandwidth of the Testbed's Internet connection which is currently limited to a single 1.54 Mbit DS-1 line, shared by all researchers at UCSB.

  1. A 10 Mbit SONET network is available for UC intercampus traffic, but is not currently connected to the Internet. Various entities within the UC system, including ADL, are lobbying to establish regional, shared Internet connections to this high-speed internal network.
  2. If SDSC's renewal proposal is successful, ADL and SDSC will aggressively pursue a dedicated high-speed network connection.
  3. UCSB is participating in a UC systemwide effort to provide UC connectivity to the emerging vBNS high-speed research internet (aka ``Internet 2''
There is also a strong need to upgrade the database support platform. We are currently researching the feasibility of acquiring a Sun Enterprise Server 300 for this purpose.
