DISCUSSION OF SELECTED BUDGET ITEMS

The budget contains line items for two full-time software system engineers at an annual salary of $60,000 per annum each. It is our firm conviction that such individuals are absolutely critical for the successful completion of the project. While univerity groups have excellent track records in performing the basic research that is necessary for a project such as Alexandria to succeed, it is neither their role nor their inclination to focus on the special skills that are necessary to produce the ``industrial strength'' software that is required for a testbed system serving several libraries and many users. It is particularly important to have a strong and reliable system in major evaluation phases of the project. Based on these considerations and the experience of several of the co-PIs in developing large-scale software systems in university environments, it is imperative that full-time, professional software system engineers be responsible for a large number of the relatively mundane tasks that underlie systems development and integration. We believe that the combination of two professional systems engineers and faculty and graduate student researchers and the staff of our industrial partners will be a uniquely successful combination in designing, developing and evaluating our proposed testbed system.
