- The prototype will be made available to a controlled subset of
users and library personnel and will be demonstrated at conferences
and regional workshops.
Analyze and revise assessment tools.
Reports of regional workshops will be disseminated.
-
Start refinements of user requirements and architectural design
for the testbed.
Specify both the internal and external interfaces for all the
components of the system.
Begin the detailed design of the testbed components.
-
Implement a prototype ingest system based on wavelet
decomposition selected.
Investigate the use of wavelet coefficients for indexing.
-
Continuing investigation of functionality for the testbed interface
and design issues for interfaces.
-
Investigation of the integration of text-based and visually-based languages
Initial implementation of:
the text-based query language (extended SQL or MDBL);
the visual query language and the GQBE language;
the browse system for raster data based on wavelet transformation, using extended khoros procedures; and
a query processing module.
-
Initial integration of the interface components and
integration with catalogue system.
Initial testing of elements of early interface on system users.
- Complete design of the data model and language components, and
prototype implementation of a subsystem supporting the data model and
language.
-
Implement a prototype nonlinear filtering system for enhancement and
feature detection in satellite images.
Implement a prototype image registration system and evaluate its
performance.
Investigate a non-linear error diffusion algorithm for printing high
quality hardcopies of image data.
Implement a prototype indexing system based on texture and contour
information.
-
Extending the content-based indexing to distributed data and
examining the issues related to replicating and distributing index
structures.
Investigate the issue of concurrent usage of index structures.
-
Modify our models to take into consideration the performance
of the prototype built during the first year, as well as changes
in the network.
Develop a network authentication mechanism.
Modify an existing network authentication protocol or develop
a new protocol to work with the distributed testbed.
-
For the components that would benefit from parallelization
(identified in Year I), examine existing techniques and propose
preliminary versions of parallel algorithms. Implement/experiment
on UCSB-accessible parallel computers such as the CS Department
CS-2 Meiko using
data ported from the working prototype sets of spatial data and types
of queries.
-
Observe the law, information policies, and incentives
in action. Carry out studies of local jurisdictions identified as
following differing information policy approaches and analyze comparatively.
