National Center for Geographic Info. and Analysis (SES 88- 10917)
NCGIA was established in 1988 after a national competition, when NSF selected a consortium of UCSB, SUNY Buffalo and the University of Maine after extensive peer review. The cooperative agreement signed in 1988 and administered through the Geography and Regional Science program funded NCGIA for five years at a base level of $1.1 million per year. An external peer review was conducted by NSF in 1990. In November 1991, NCGIA submitted a successful proposal for a three year extension of the cooperative agreement through 1996. To date, NCGIA research has resulted in approximately 700 publications, of which some 300 have appeared in the refereed literature, and 12 books. NCGIA principals who will be involved in the Alexandria project include Goodchild (NCGIA Director and PI), T.R. Smith (NCGIA co-PI), Buttenfield and Mark (NCGIA Buffalo), Egenhofer (Associate Director of NCGIA at Maine), and Beard and Onsrud (NCGIA Maine). Selected publications are listed for each of these individuals in the biographies.
