Metadata Standards Activities

Linda Hill participated in three metadata standards activities.

  1. Hill was appointed to the FGDC/ISO advisory committee for the Metadata Standard component (Working Group 3) of the ISO TC211 Standard Committee on Geographic Information/Geomatics. This committee has reviewed, discussed, and made recommendations to the U.S. Geological Survey representative to the TC211 Working Group 3 - Richard Pearsall - regarding the structure of the international metadata standard that is the equivalent of the FGDC Content Standard. When the ISO standard is approved and available, the FGDC will revise its standard to be in compliance with the international standard.

  2. Hill was also appointed as an U.S. expert in an advisory capacity for Part 12 of the TC211 standard on ``Spatial referencing by geographic identifiers.'' This is the part of the standard that will address gazetteer-type referencing for geographic information. In this capacity, Hill reviewed the draft standard and submitted comments and recommendations to the U.S. TC211 representatives.

  3. Hill is a member of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS) Standards Committee which reviews proposed standards of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and submits the ASIS vote.
