Professional Staff

The following changes occurred in our professional staff:

  1. In response to a Alexandria Advisory Board recommendation that we hire a project manager, a search process was immediately set in motion. We offered the position to Joy Colucci, who has had significant experience in managing large teams involved in digital library-type projects in the context of the EOSDIS program of Hughes. Joy is worked for us in this capacity as a consultant from Hughes for at least two days per week. She concentrated on helping Alexandria field an operational version of the testbed.

  2. Jim Frew took up the position of Assistant Professor with the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB.

  3. Greg Janee joined the ADL team as a full-time programmer/analyst. He received his BS in Mathematics and his MS in Computer Science from UCSB. Greg has 12 years experience in software engineering, including designing and developing large object-oriented systems. Prior to joining ADL, he was a senior software engineer at GRC International Inc., in Santa Barbara where he developed scientific visualization and simulation support tools.

  4. Bob Mosdal joined the Systems Engineering Team of ADL after working as a programmer/analyst for the Financial Aid Department of UCSB. He will be working on database administration for ADL and for the Institute of Computaional Earth System Science in a split position. Previously he was employed by the Library Automation Help Desk at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While in Madison he also worked for the USDA-FS Forest Products Laboratory. Bob received his MA in the Library and Information Sciences from Madison in the Fall of 1989. Priot to that, he received his BA in Political Science from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

  5. Robert Nideffer joined the User Interface Development Team. Robert Nideffer researches, teaches, and publishes in the areas of technology and culture, contemporary social theory, and electronic intermedia. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology, and an MFA in Computer Arts, and is a founding editor of SPEED, an online journal devoted to the study of technology, media, and society. Presently, Robert works with the Alexandria Digital Library where he is director of interface design and implementation, and is a co-principal investigator of a two year initiative to research and develop online public spaces.

  6. Nathan Freitas joined the User Interface Development Team. Nathan is the lead programmer for the Interface Design and Implementation Team at the Alexandria Digital Library. He graduated from UCSB in June of 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts, Creative Studies (Music Composition). Nathan has participated in the development of a variety of online projects including ``Bodies INCorporated'' and SPEED: Technology, Media, Society, and ``Life In the Universe with Stephen Hawking'' a CD-ROM produced by the EAT Lab at UCSB, and MetaCreations. He is currently involved in an initiative to research multiuser visualization tools using Java and VRML.
